Seven Things

Seven happy things, because it's been a really hard week:

1. When students ask me to write letters of recommendation.

2. The first rose of spring in my patio garden.

3. The lizards on my patio are doing push-ups right now. This is obviously because the Rio Olympics are only three years away. My lizards are high-achieving planner-aheaders, that's what.

4. The Ocean, she dances.

5. The sweet peas my neighbor brought over yesterday. I wish I could post a scratch and sniff picture for your smelling pleasure.

6. The other day I squished a dollop of shaving cream between my fingers because squishing shaving cream is one of the most satisfying things in the world, and when I opened my hand the dollop looked like a stegosaurus. What are the ODDS, people!

7.

Amen and Amen.

Will you tell me a happy thing, now?!

  1. Last night I was telling my husband I need something to fill some of my free time. (I know most people in our culture are over-busy, but we have created our life-schedule to have free time.)
He had what seemed like 50 ideas for me! A lot of them feel huge and overwhelming (write a book, start a baking business...) but I realized recently that I am not a risk taker, so it might be something worth trying. I love moments I actually take to dream a little. Thanks for sharing your happies with us.

    1. Jenny,

Oh this makes me happy! 1) It makes me happy that you and your husband make room for rest in your weekly rhythms, 2) It makes me happy that he knows you so well his ideas for your free time came tumbling out into a great big list, 3) It makes me happy that you are going to dream big and take risks. Books and baking go very well together. . .!

I hope your day is filled with happy dreaming.

  2. My dear Sarah,
Stegos are my favorite and I watched Jurassic Park in 3D last night (which is great). Your writing is so timely.
Sometimes I think about riding dinosaurs in heaven and it makes me smile. I would love to slide down the neck of a Patagosaurus (the long necked herbivore in Land Before Time).

    1. Jena,

This makes me smile, oh so big. I haven't seen any version of Jurassic Park (I should change that), and I would love to side down the neck of a patagosaurus with you in heaven. Maybe Jesus would want to slide with us?! And then we could have dinosaur races, with you on the back of a stego, and me on the back of a t-rex. We'll race further up and further in, and we'll hoot and holler the whole way. ;)

      I love it.

  3. Are you sure you're not related to Anne of Green Gables? Because it is apparent you find "so much scope for imagination" in all things. So refreshing!

    1. Anne of Green Gables is one of my dearest friends — close enough, almost, to be a sister. ;) This really should be happy thing #8: "Someone thought I could be related to my dear friend Anne of Green Gables."

      I. love. it.

  4. One thing that has been making me smile lately is "Pushing Daisies," as per your recommendation. Thank you! We're loving it. (I'm especially drawn to the vibrant color scheme. Makes me want to update the ol' wardrobe. I could pull off a 60s up-do, don't cha think?)

    1. I'm so glad you're enjoying the series, Julianna! Isn't it a hoot?! So clever and dear. And I agree with you: the sets and costumes are beautiful. It's such an artistic set — everything is very well done!

Thank you for sharing your happy thing. It made me smile. :)

  5. The thing that makes me smile is the word "dollop". I don't think it is used enough in society today. It's much less grody then, say, "glob" or "clump". It has fallen into disuse and I might just start have to start a campaign to bring it back.

    1. Snapdragon,

There is something sophisticated about the word dollop, isn't there? I often find myself saying it with a British accent. . . Perhaps if we all started saying it with a British accent we'd bring it back into regular usage!
